The Evangelist
The monthly newsletter of the
Parish of Saint John the Apostle
September 2010
Dear Parish Family and Friends,
I was looking at an Orthodox calendar and came across the falling a sleep of St. John the Apostle. I thought it might be a good time to retell the story of our patron saint.
St. John was the son of Zebedee and Salome, the sister of Mary. His brother was James the Great. John was called by our Lord to be an apostle during his first year of ministry. He became the “beloved disciple” and the only one of the twelve who did not forsake the Savior in the hour of His Passion. He stood faithfully at the cross when the Savior made him guardian of His Mother. His later life was passed chiefly in Jerusalem. He was a good friend to St. Peter.
Together they went to the Lord's tomb. They were together at the Pentecost and participated together in the healing of the lame man at the Beautiful Gate of the Temple. Together they appeared before the Sanhedrin and together they went to lay their hands on those who were baptized in Samaria. St. John later visited the Island of Patmos. His most significant work seems to have been done in Ephesus where he founded many churches and wrote the New Testament writings which bears his name. He is said to have died in Ephesus, quietly, in his sleep. Presumably, he was the only one of the Twelve to die a peaceful and natural death.
Illumine us also with the brightness of your light.
In Christ,
Father Wirth
